A magic sleight of hand?
Equating concise with brief misses half the story. Concise is not word count alone.
Concise, instead, is defined by contrast: the full-ness of an idea, without a word wasted in expressing it.
It’s this contrast that captures our attention. (Because it’s how our difference-seeking brain works at a fundamental level.)
Grasp this and you’ve got a whole new insight into communication.
Concision is evocative when we encounter it. It’s like a magic sleight of hand transforming something before our eyes.
In layman’s terms, it’s about doing or saying more, with less.
And that’s why you have to begin with the quality and clarity of the idea first—because that’s where you find the depth of thought.
Nail that first. And then work to hone the idea in fewer and clearer words.
Make it meaningful. And then make it shine, by making it tight.
